How to compare psychology theories without just listing them

A psychology answer can contain several accurate definitions and still feel unfinished. That often happens when the task asks for comparison or evaluation, but the response presents one theory after another without showing how they relate.

Find the shared question

Before comparing two theories, identify what both are trying to explain. Are they addressing learning, development, memory, or behaviour in a particular setting? A shared question gives the comparison a centre. Without it, you may compare details that do not address the same problem.

Make a small table with the explanation proposed by each theory, its key assumptions, and the kind of evidence that would support it. Keep the descriptions concise. The aim is to expose the relationship, not write the whole answer in the table.

Compare on the same dimension

Choose a dimension such as the role of environment, the treatment of internal processes, or the scope of the explanation. Discuss both theories under that heading. Then move to another dimension. This produces a comparison rather than two separate summaries.

In a tutoring session, explain the contrast in ordinary language before polishing the academic wording. If you cannot state the difference simply, adding more terminology may make the problem harder to see.

Distinguish evidence from a claim about evidence

When you mention a study, identify what its design and findings can actually support. A result consistent with a theory does not automatically establish every claim associated with that theory. Consider the population, measures, and setting before generalising.

Evaluation should connect a specific strength or limitation to the argument. Instead of writing that a study is ‘limited,’ explain how a particular feature affects interpretation. Avoid turning every methodological point into a universal criticism; different designs answer different questions.

Practise a small argument

Draft one paragraph with a clear comparison, a relevant piece of evidence from your course readings, and a sentence explaining its significance. A tutor can ask whether the evidence supports the conclusion and where the reasoning needs another step.

Use fictional examples and academic materials you are allowed to share. Psychology tutoring is educational support, not counselling, diagnosis, or treatment. Your final assessed writing should reflect your own thinking and follow your institution’s rules on assistance. A useful session helps you develop the argument, not outsource it.
